Fall Events and Festivals in Raleigh

Some of Raleigh's best annual events happen in the fall. Here are a few you won't want to miss:

  • The North Carolina State Fair is held in Raleigh every October, and it's a fun-filled celebration of all our state has to offer. From October 17-27, 2024, enjoy entertainment, rides, a flower and garden show, live animals, a massive hall showcasing North Carolina agriculture, local food and drinks, and arts and crafts demonstrations.
  • If you're a fan of folk music, plan to attend the IBMA World of Bluegrass Festival , which will be held in Raleigh from September 24-28, 2024. Some of the world's best bluegrass artists will perform on multiple stages throughout downtown, and there will be food trucks, an art market, jam tents for musicians, workshops, an exhibit hall, mini camps for kids, and youth performances. This is the largest urban bluegrass festival in the world, so come enjoy the sweet sounds of banjos and fiddles!
  • Fall in Raleigh also brings a yearly tradition for beer lovers: Oktoberfest! This traditional German folk festival has made its way to the Triad, so you'll find many places to celebrate Oktoberfest in Raleigh. For example, Lafayette Village will be holding an Oktoberfest celebration on September 28, 2024, with fall-inspired brews, German foods, live music, and even a wiener dog race.

Scenic Drives Near Raleigh

One of the best ways to enjoy the autumn colors is by taking a scenic drive. Hop in your Honda and check out some of these picturesque roads in Raleigh:

  • Six Forks Road in north Raleigh runs past Falls Lake, so you'll get a view of both the fall colors and the shimmering water on this drive.
  • Smaller state roads are often some of the best places to get off the beaten path and enjoy a scenic drive. From Durham, we recommend taking US-501 to Pittsboro where the road intersects with US-64, then US-64 into Raleigh.

Outdoor Activities Near Raleigh

Cooler weather and fall leaves? Sounds like the perfect time to get outside for a walk or hike. Here's where you can do that near Raleigh.

  • Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is in Cary, just a short drive from Raleigh (and only half an hour from Durham). This 140-acre preserve has three miles of trails, scenic overlooks, and a center with interactive nature exhibits.

  • Back in Raleigh, check out William B. Umstead State Park . It has 13 miles of multi-use trails (used for mountain biking and horseback riding) and 22 miles of hiking trails. You can also camp, canoe, and fish in this park.
